Mr. James J. Maguire is Chairman Emeritus and Founder of Philadelphia Insurance Companies. Organized in 1960 and incorporated in 1962. In 1980, Mr. Maguire formed a holding company, which was (until 12-01-08) publicly traded under the name “Philadelphia Consolidated Holding Corp.” (NASDAQ – PHLY). (On December 1, 2008 he initiated and completed what was then the largest transaction for financial firms in Japanese history, selling Phly for $5.5 billion to Tokio Marine Insurance Group, the fourth largest global insurance company, based in Tokyo, Japan with offices in 37 Countries. Philadelphia Consolidated Holding Corp. owns (100%) of four subsidiaries with assets of $7 billion:

Philadelphia Insurance Company is domiciled in Pennsylvania and approved to write
Surplus lines insurance in all states plus the District of Columbia.
Philadelphia Indemnity Insurance Company is domiciled in Pennsylvania and licensed to write property and casualty insurance in all states.
Liberty American Insurance Group is the holding company for two personal lines insurance companies domiciled in Florida – Liberty American Insurance Company and Mobile USA Insurance Company.
The insurance companies are pooled by A.M. Best Company and carry an “A++ (Superior)” rating. The Company underwrites over 125 specialty property and casualty insurance products through its 50 underwriting offices and 20,000 independent agents, located in the major markets across the United States from Maine to Hawaii.

Personal:
James J. and Frances M. Maguire live in Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia at the same address for the past 43 years and are the parents of nine children (four boys and five girls, one son is deceased) ranging in age from 38 – 52 and 21 grandchildren. They are avid golf, tennis and biking enthusiasts. Jim and Frannie are members of Our Mother of Consolation Catholic Church. Mr. Maguire is a charter member of the St. Joseph’s University Magis Society, a recipient of the Shield of Loyola (the University’s highest honor) and has been honored by the University which named their new 38 acre Merion campus “The James J. Maguire ’58 Campus.” Mr. Maguire has received an honorary degree in Law from Gwynedd-Mercy College, Chestnut Hill College, and is an honorary member of Beta Gamma Sigma. Mr. Maguire is the author of a biography, titled “Just Show Up Every Day” (Available on Amazon.com and the Kindle Store) which chronicles the history of Philadelphia Insurance Companies, the Maguire family and his personal struggle with dyslexia. Mr. and Mrs. Maguire are Co-Principals in the Maguire Foundation, a philanthropic enterprise which focuses its resources on education.
Ancestors:
Great Grandfather Francis Maguire immigrated to Philadelphia in 1854 from Enniskillen, County Fermanaugh, Ireland. Grandfather Daniel Durkin, his Mother’s Father came to America from Ireland in early 1908.
